Home library service continues to deliver in Oxfordshire

People who use Oxfordshire County Council’s home library service are overwhelmingly pleased with the service they receive, according to feedback from a recent customer survey.

The questionnaire, which was sent to 175 customers visited by library staff, aimed to measure customer satisfaction and gather suggestions for improvement.

Based on feedback from 102 customers, 87.5 per cent rated the service as very good or excellent, and all respondents indicated they would recommend it to a friend.

Councillor Neil Fawcett, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Corporate Services, said: “The home library service allows people who are unable to get to a library to be able to continue reading the books they love. It is more than just books alone; it’s a vital community asset.

"Many use the service because they can't leave home, sometimes making it one of their few social interactions. Our staff and volunteers also ensure these individuals are safe and their needs are met.

"We're so pleased with the positive feedback and will work on suggested improvements, such as adding more large print books."

Each year, over 800 residents benefit from the home library service, thanks to the dedication of approximately 187 volunteers and library staff.

In 2023 alone, 200 new customers signed up, with a further 143 in 2024.

Kevin Salway, Home Library Service Manager at Oxfordshire County Council, said: “I think we can all agree the home library service is a fantastic service that is hugely appreciated by its customers. We work to a tight three week schedule and the team put in a huge effort to ensure all our customers are happy. I hope this year we can reach out to new potential customers and continue to provide valued support to existing ones.”

With the help of library staff and volunteers, the service looks after and delivers books and audio visual items to those who struggle to visit a library due to their personal circumstances.

It is completely free of charge to customers, many of whom are elderly or housebound, and it can also be used on a short-term basis following illness or hospitalisation. Those with carer responsibilities are also welcome to apply.
