Free family day at Oxfordshire’s hidden gem

Families from across Oxfordshire can celebrate the start of the summer holidays with fun activities and a taste of local heritage at the Oxfordshire Museum’s Family Day on 24 July.

The free event, organised by Oxfordshire County Council’s museum service, will take place at the archaeological site of the Bishop’s Palace in Witney from 10am to 4pm.

There will be plenty for everyone to enjoy, including arts and crafts, and even object handling sessions with the council’s Finds Liaison Officer, Ed Caswell.

Councillor Neil Fawcett, Deputy Leader of Oxfordshire County Council and Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “With the summer in full swing, why not come along and enjoy some festivities and a picnic on the lawn at the little known but fascinating Bishop’s Palace?

“It’s a chance to explore Oxfordshire’s rich history in a relaxed and family friendly setting. This is just one of many free events throughout the summer hosted by our brilliant museum service. There’s something for everyone to enjoy, and it’s a wonderful way to support local heritage.”

The historic building known as the Bishop’s Palace was built by the Bishop of Winchester in the 12th and 13th centuries and later became a manor house. In 1757, it was acquired by the Duke of Marlborough.

While the site is accessible, please note that the gravel surface around the archaeological area may be difficult for some accessibility vehicles to navigate.
