Dragons, fairies and folklore come to life at the Oxfordshire Museum
Step into Oxfordshire’s world of dragons, fairies, folklore and local legends this summer, as a new exhibition at the Oxfordshire Museum invites people to discover the tales that have shaped the county for generations.
Timeless Tales, which opens to the public on 18 July and runs until 6 September at the Oxfordshire County Council-run museum in Woodstock, explores the county’s rich folklore through tales of superstition, traditions and mythology.
Visitors will be able to explore a woodland setting, encounter a dragon and uncover beliefs, customs and local legends that have shaped Oxfordshire over time, with objects from the museum’s collection bringing the exhibition to life.
Little ones can also enjoy a special fairy door trail in the museum garden.
Councillor Neil Fawcett, Deputy Leader of Oxfordshire County Council, said: “This is a fascinating exhibition about stories and storytelling throughout our county’s history, bringing together traditions and local legends that continue to capture people’s imaginations.
“Whether you’re interested in local history, old beliefs or simply a good tale, this exhibition is a chance to see Oxfordshire in a new light and discover folklore hidden in familiar places. I hope residents and visitors of all ages will enjoy exploring the exhibition and feel inspired to share their own stories and traditions too.”
The exhibition is inspired by the discovery of notes recorded by Miss Constance Stanley-Smith, a former Oxfordshire County Librarian, who, from 1935, collected accounts of folklore, superstitions, miracles, hauntings and traditions from parishes throughout the county.
