OCC recently signed up to the Disability Confident scheme, which enables us to think differently about disability, while improving the ways we attract, recruit and retain disabled workers. The scheme is voluntary and has been developed by employers and disabled people’s representatives.

We are diverse in our approach to recruitment and recognise that talent comes in all different forms. As a Disability Confident employer, the county council is committed to ensuring we have the policies, practices and channels in place to ensure anyone with a disability can fully participate and thrive within the workplace.

One example of our commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace is operating a supported business, County Print Finishers – which provides socially responsible design, print and data destruction. It’s run by Oxfordshire Employment, which was awarded Disability Confident Leader status in 2017 – and is currently the only DC leader in Oxfordshire.

At the print finishers, the majority of staff have a disability or health issues. By offering employment opportunities, we help adults furthest from the workplace to gain essential skills and experience needed to move into a career.

Staff are paid whilst they learn and are supported in gaining employability skills, both as a journey to long-term sustainable employment at the print finishers, or as a stepping stone to external employment.

There is also help in supporting applications for employment moving forward – with a specialist linking them to access to work funding and helping them in long-term external employment.

Last year, Oxfordshire's Employment Support Team were highly commended for their work with County Print Finishers at the Base Awards – coming second for Best Team!
