Oxfordshire County Council marks Carers Rights Day 2025
Oxfordshire County Council is proud to support Carers Rights Day 2025, an annual event organised by Carers UK to raise awareness of the rights of unpaid carers and the support available to them.
Across the UK, there are an estimated 5.8 million unpaid carers, and in Oxfordshire alone, that number is over 50,000. These individuals provide vital care for family members, friends, and loved ones, often balancing caring responsibilities with work and other commitments.
This year’s theme, “Know your rights, use your rights”, highlights the importance of carers understanding the legal protections and practical support available to them.
From flexible working arrangements under the Employment Relations Act to free flu jabs and carer’s assessments, these rights are designed to help carers stay well while continuing their caring role.
Karen Fuller, Director of Adult Social Care at Oxfordshire County Council, said: “Carers Rights Day is an opportunity to recognise the incredible contribution unpaid carers make every day. We want to ensure carers know their rights and feel supported – both in the community and within the council.
“The council’s carers network provides a safe space for staff to share experiences and access resources, and we encourage anyone with caring responsibilities to connect with us.”
Nicola Dyche and Megan DeCruz, both Carers Network Leads at Oxfordshire County Council, said: “Unpaid carers are the backbone of our communities. They give so much of themselves to support loved ones, often at great personal cost.
“Carers Rights Day reminds us that carers deserve recognition, respect, and practical support. Oxfordshire County Council is committed to working with partners to make sure carers have the help they need.”
The council works in partnership with health and voluntary organisations to improve support for carers and has invested over £1 million annually in a 10-year programme to strengthen services. This includes increasing carers’ payments, expanding respite care, and providing one-off grants for specific needs.
Through Carers Oxfordshire, commissioned by the council, carers can access practical and emotional support, advocacy, and time-out opportunities. Internally, the Council offers a range of resources for staff carers, including the Carers Network, Carer’s Leave and Emergency Leave policies, and the Employee Assistance Programme (PAM Assist).
