Next stage of A40 improvements agreed

Improvements to the A40 between Eynsham and Oxford have taken a significant step forward following a decision to continue towards construction by Oxfordshire County Council’s cabinet.

The council’s cabinet has agreed to progress the next construction phase of the A40 programme, covering the stretch between Eynsham Park and Ride and Cassington. The scheme includes bus priority measures, junction improvements, crossings and improved infrastructure for walking, wheeling and cycling. Meanwhile, further work is needed before starting construction at Duke’s Cut bridge.

Councillor Liz Leffman, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways Construction and Repair said: “This stretch of the A40 is a vital transport route and we remain committed to improving journeys and providing people with better, more sustainable travel choices.

“The decision means we can move ahead with the main improvements while taking a responsible approach to the more complex work at Duke’s Cut bridge.

“We need to make sure that we fully understand the work required, the costs and the risks before committing further public money to that section of the scheme.

“Pausing this element does not mean it is being abandoned. Bus priority at Duke’s Cut remains important and we will continue working to identify the right way forward.”

Further work will now be undertaken on the Duke’s Cut element of the wider scheme, to better understand the structural maintenance requirements and consider opportunities to reduce costs and identify funding.

Main construction is expected to start in early Spring 2027 and continue for at least two years.
