New year’s eve fireworks safety advice 2024
Residents in Oxfordshire are being reminded of the importance of fireworks safety ahead of new year’s eve celebrations.
Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service advises that the safest way to enjoy fireworks is at a professionally organised public event.
Councillor Dr Nathan Ley, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Inequalities and Community Safety, said: “We want people to have fun on new year’s eve, however, I urge everyone to be sensible and to take a few moments to read our safety tips.”
Deb Forder, Community Safety Manager from Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Organised fireworks displays are cheaper and far safer than hosting your own fireworks party. However, if you are planning on using fireworks for a private event on 31 December, or at other community gatherings, it’s key to check out the firework safety and UK law around their use. You can check out the British Fireworks Association’s dedicated website for this.
Safety tips include only buying CE quality marked fireworks from reputable and licensed shops and keeping fireworks in a closed metal box.
Anyone planning a fireworks display should consider where fireworks and debris might fall, ensuring safety distances are provided for people to keep safe. Safety distances are provided on each firework label or package.
Deb added: “People are reminded to always light fireworks at arm's length with a taper and stand well back, keeping naked flames, including cigarettes, away from the fireworks. Never return to a firework that has not gone off, and never throw used or unused fireworks.”
