New free online coaching service helps residents reduce alcohol consumption
Extra free support is available for people who would like to reduce their drinking with a new pilot online coaching service from DrinkCoach, on behalf of Oxfordshire County Council.
The 12 month pilot, which launched 1 March, offers individuals with up to six 40 minute sessions to help make changes to their drinking with the aim to reduce the risk alcohol poses to their health.
Those who live in Oxfordshire and score as ‘increasing risk’ or ‘higher risk’ in DrinkCoach’s alcohol test are eligible and will be automatically signposted to online coaching.
Residents can also book a coaching session directly through DrinkCoach’s website.
Councillor Nathan Ley, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Inequalities, and Community Safety, said: “While alcoholic drinks can be enjoyed in moderation, continued or excessive consumption can lead to a range of health problems such as sleep problems, liver disease, mental health problems, cancer and more.
“This new coaching service aims to support people to change their drinking habits and feel better. It's ideal for anyone wanting to reduce or stop drinking, with regular check-ins and encouragement to keep you on track.”
Sessions can be booked seven days a week, including evenings, subject to availability of coaches. All sessions are conducted online through video calls.
Derek, one of the service’s coaches, said: “Having a drink coach can make a huge difference. It is someone you can have honest, no-nonsense conversations with about your drinking habits and set some real goals to get where you want to be.
“It works because a drink coach offers independent support, as they don't have the emotional attachment that a family member or loved one might have, and you can be completely open with them.
This is among a number of services launched in 2025 that will provide support for residents and communities health and wellbeing.
