Multi-million pound transport improvement plans go on show

Big plans that will transform Botley Road, Oxford, for cyclists, pedestrians and public transport are to go on show in June.

Oxfordshire County Council is planning to spend £9.1m on measures that will include bus, cycle and pedestrian improvements along one of the city’s major routes.

Feasibility work is complete and a series of exhibitions have been arranged to inform people about the planned improvements.

A vital link that needs improvement

County Councillor Yvonne Constance, Cabinet member for Environment, said: “Botley Road is an important route which has great potential for encouraging more people onto sustainable transport.

“The corridor is a vital public transport link and also takes hundreds of cyclists and pedestrians into the city each day. If we are serious about getting more people to use sustainable transport we have to invest to make it more attractive.

“It’s no secret that many people think improvements could and should be done to improve Botley Road for sustainable transport – and I am one of them.

“I would urge anyone who has an interest in the improvement of Botley Road to attend one of the exhibitions or look at the website.

“We will carefully take into account the responses to this consultation as we further develop our plans for improving the Botley Road.”

About the plans

The plans include bus priority measures to improve journey times and reliability. There will also be major cycle improvements to create a safer and continuous route along the corridor. This includes changes to several junctions along the route, notably restricting access to some side roads, where there have been collisions with cyclists, and additional cycle lanes.

Also proposed is a more consistent and improved footpath, including additional crossings, which will benefit pedestrians.

Surface repairs and improvements will be carried out to enhance the condition and ride quality of the road to benefit of all users.
