Local government reorganisation update
The government has announced it will review its local government reorganisation (LGR) decisions across England, following legal advice. This will have implications on the future of councils in Oxfordshire and West Berkshire.
Councillor Tim Bearder, Leader of Oxfordshire County Council, said: “I welcome today’s announcement pausing the government’s minded to decision for local government reorganisation (LGR) for Oxfordshire. It provides an opportunity to review the underpinning advice, considerations and evidence that informed the secretary of state’s decision, which I have already written to MHCLG to ask to see.
Cllr Judith Edwards, Cabinet Member for LGR and Human Resources, added: “Considerable work has taken place already to prepare our communities for LGR in Oxfordshire and West Berkshire along the lines of the government’s announcement in July.
"We will be seeking further clarity from the government, including what this means for local elections in May, and how this will affect the LGR timeline in our area.”
