New Oxfordshire Museum exhibition marks over six decades of collaboration for local artists
Oxfordshire art lovers are being invited to immerse themselves in the creative vision of renowned local artists David Lockett and Peter Ross, with a new, free, exhibition of their works coming soon to The Oxfordshire Museum.
The exhibition, which includes landscapes, portraits, and abstract works, will open on Saturday 6 September and run until Sunday 21 September. It showcases the work of the two artists whose friendship and professional journey began over six decades ago.

David Lockett, who will be presenting his most recent works - predominantly landscapes and seascapes - describes his practice as one rooted in direct observation, sketching plein air before completing his oil paintings on canvas in the studio. He crafts and paints his own frames to complement each artwork, striving to infuse his pieces with expressive elements of colour, tone, and texture that transcend mere representation.
Peter Ross will be exhibiting a selection of paintings created over the past fifty years, drawing inspiration from a breadth of themes, including evocative family portraits, global conflicts, and homages to influential artists and their masterpieces.
He also won the Oxfordshire Museum’s Open Art competition in 2024, with his entry “Emma Groves, Belfast 1978”, which focuses on a victim of the troubles in Northern Ireland.
Both artists have held several joint exhibitions together, with a friendship spanning over 60 years.
Most of the paintings featured in the exhibition are available for purchase, and David Lockett will also offer giclée prints and postcards of selected works, providing visitors with an opportunity to enjoy and collect his art in various formats.
Following this highly anticipated exhibition, visitors can look forward to the museum’s third annual Open Art Competition Exhibition, opening on 27 September and featuring an inspiring display of shortlisted contemporary artworks from across the county.
