Improvement work set to improve traffic flow and bus journey times at Oxford roundabout
Work is to take place at an Oxford roundabout next week to improve traffic flows, including reducing bus journey times.
From Monday 27 July, Oxfordshire County Council will start refurbishing Rose Hill roundabout traffic signals junction, which links the A4142 eastern bypass and Oxford Road between Rose Hill and Littlemore.
The project, due to last up to eight weeks, is being funded by a government grant for the council’s bus service improvement plan (BSIP).
Councillor Gareth Epps, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “This is the first refurbishment of this important interchange since 1995, and the upgrade is going to deliver a significant improvement in the roundabout’s efficiency and the flow of the ring road.
“This is another clear demonstration of bus service investment in the county and our efforts to speed up bus journeys and make buses a more convenient and attractive mode of travel.”
The work, which will take place overnight to reduce disruption, will be carried out in two phases.
The existing poles will be replaced, and a new signal controller will control the intelligent bus priority function, allowing improvements to bus journey times
New extra low voltage (ELV) equipment will be installed with ELV LED signal heads which, as well as greatly reducing the power consumption and carbon footprint of the site, will reduce hazards in the event of accidental damage to the equipment.
The upgraded junctions are equipped with technology which detects the imminent arrival of buses and then changes the phasing to reduce delays for buses and keep them on time.
The countywide programme has been successful in obtaining over £2.1 million in bus grants from the Department for Transport’s BSIP / Bus Grant in recent years, which has supported the refurbishment of 31 traffic signal junctions. The ongoing programme for 2026/27 to 2029/30 has been allocated almost £1.5m.
