Don’t waste your Bank Holiday Weekends!

Weather forecasters say spring will have finally sprung as we enter the first of May’s two Bank Holiday Weekends.

And as residents get stuck in to the gardening, DIY and spring cleaning it means our seven recycling centres are facing their busiest weekends of the year.

But waste management manager Teresa Mitchell says a simple hack could save you an hour or so in the queue at the tip.

Said Teresa: “All of our centres are open until 8pm on Thursdays between April and September. So if you have somewhere to store your waste for a few days you can come during late hours opening and won’t waste valuable holiday time.

“Our sites do get very, very busy over the three-day weekends and we’ll be open, as usual, from 8am until 5pm.”

Added Teresa: “As a county we are now only sending some four per cent of household waste to landfill which is an enormous credit to how eco-conscious our residents are.”

But she also reminds customers that charges are now made on some items that the council used to accept for free.

“Although things like soil, rubble and wood left over from DIY projects come from your home they are not classified as household waste.

“If you do bring such items there is a small charge. Check the details on our website for which items are charged for and how much.”
