Discovery: celebrate the creativity of Oxfordshire at a new art exhibition

A new art exhibition at The Oxfordshire Museum aims to display the creativity of the county, featuring a showcase of art from residents focusing on the theme of discovery.

The Oxfordshire County Council run museum will run the exhibition until Sunday 5 November. It features a collection of moments and scenes captured across Oxfordshire, the UK, the world and even space.

Typewriters and fairies, science and technology, are all found in this fascinating exhibition that explores the concept of discovery through the creativity of artists.

As part of the exhibition, a competition took place to find artworks that best addressed the theme of discovery. First and second prizes were awarded by one of the two guest judges, Councillor Kate Gregory, at an event on 16 September.

The first prize went to Hannah Farncombe for her portrait ‘Louis’, and the second prize to Jane Smith for her piece ‘Wonders of Woodstock’.

Councillor Kate Gregory, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services and Safety, said: “It was a privilege to judge the competition for this new and exciting community exhibition. It is a unique idea and does a wonderful job of showcasing Oxfordshire and beyond through the eyes of the county’s residents, while also giving people an opportunity to show off their talents. Congratulations to our two winners.

“Entry to the museum is free, and there’s always something for everyone, from fun activities for younger visitors, galleries to explore to a relaxing garden and café to unwind in. A great day out for all.”

Free art-based activities will be on offer, including creating a community mural and a free drop-in ‘cut, collage and draw’ art session aimed at adults on Saturday 21 October. From 1 November, there will also be a paid for series of discover printmaking workshops.
