Take the first step in your career with Oxfordshire County Council’s customer services

School and university leavers in Oxfordshire are being encouraged to consider a career in customer services by joining the team at Oxfordshire County Council.

A role within customer services can provide individuals with transferable skills that can be used throughout their careers.

Abbie Crossan is one person to have seen the benefits of a role in customer services and is urging others to apply and join this great team.

headshotTeam leader Abbie, who is 28, joined the council in June 2018 as a customer services advisor. Since then she has risen to the position of team leader and manages a team of 12 advisors – covering blue badges, concessionary fares, registration of births, marriages, civil partnerships and deaths; and the reception at County Hall.

Abbie explained: "When I joined as a customer service advisor in 2018, this was my first experience working in an office environment. But I have progressed from an advisor to a team supervisor and now a team leader within four years. I have had the support of my team leaders and colleagues throughout my journey at Oxfordshire County Council."

In her four years with the council, Abbie has gained a huge amount of experience and skills to help her develop her career. She explains: “I've acquired a tremendous amount of knowledge of council services and the skills to allow me to assist with customer enquiries. Aside from my day to day job, I've also gained confidence in giving presentations to internal and external stakeholders and I'm now finishing my level three Chartered Management Institute (CMI) managers apprenticeship, which the council has supported me through.

“If you're looking for a fulfilling role and care about helping others, customer services is a great team to join. We're always learning and there are opportunities for everyone to progress in their careers.”

Councillor Glynis Phillips, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Corporate Services, said: “Oxfordshire County Council is committed to helping young people reach their full potential. Joining our customer service team will help people to gain skills they can use throughout their career, wherever it may take them. The team are self-motivators and have a passion for customer excellence ”

The customer services team work Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5pm, dealing with enquiries from members of the public through telephone, email, web chat and face to face. Hybrid working is also available.

Those who may be interested in joining the team can apply for a role through Oxfordshire County Council’s careers website. The closing date for applications is 18 September.
