Young people test their consumer and safety knowledge in popular annual quiz
Schools from across Oxfordshire participated in an annual competition aimed at educating young individuals with special educational needs about consumer rights and safety.
Teams from eight schools took part in Oxfordshire County Council’s Consumer Challenge Quiz on 4 March at Unipart House, which teaches life skills and consumer knowledge through a fun, visual and hands on contest.
Each school was represented by a four member team, accompanied by a volunteer from Oxfordshire County Council. This year, Orion Academy emerged as the victorious school.
Councillor John Howson, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Families, said: “It’s very important that young people learn early about the challenges that they face from the risks as consumers, and how to deal with them. Trading standards in Oxfordshire has a long history; this particular event has been going for 30 years, and that shows the worth of it – schools are still turning up with their teams, and their supporters, to encourage them in what is a time of fierce competition. Both groups take away many lessons learnt in a new and exciting location.”
Schools that took part includes Bardwell School (Bicester), Bishopswood School (Sonning Common), Fitzwaryn School (Wantage), The Iffley Academy (Oxford), Kingfisher School (Abingdon), Mabel Prichard School (Oxford), John Watson School (Wheatley), Orion Academy (Oxford) and Springfield School (Witney).
Councillor Dr Nathan Ley, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Inequalities and Safety, said: “This popular event is a great opportunity for young people to learn skills – from knowing what their rights are when they are buying products, to understanding the risks of products such as vapes and how to stay safe in the home – in a fun way, while working as a team.
“Congratulations to the winners, and all the schools who took part!”
A mascot competition for fellow students who are not members of their team is also included, which was won this year by Mabel Prichard School.
