Oxfordshire resident charged over £15,000 for poor quality property repairs

Two traders working for a roofing company have been sentenced to five months imprisonment at Oxford Crown Court, after previously pleading guilty to contravening consumer protection offences, in an investigation brought by Oxfordshire County Council’s trading standards service.

Christopher Doherty and Jaye Cardy (both aged 29), who traded as All Type Roofing, undertook work on the home of an elderly Oxfordshire resident, who lived near Chipping Norton, charging them £15,900.

However, the work – carried out between July 2020 and August 2020 – was done to a very poor standard, with a lack of necessary care and skill, leading to an independent expert valuing the work of being nil in value.

Doherty from Leicestershire and Cardy from Hertfordshire both pleaded guilty to one breach of the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, contravening the requirement to undertake their work with professional diligence.

Councillor Jenny Hannaby, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Services and Safety, said: “These types of incidents can not only lead to Oxfordshire residents paying out large sums of money for work that is either not carried out properly, or not carried out at all, but also suffering the emotional distress that comes with such situations.

“Our trading standards team will continue to work hard to protect residents, whilst also protecting the reputation of the majority of builders who want to do the best for their customers.”

Jody Kerman, Oxfordshire County Council’s Head of Trading Standards, added: “If you are looking to have some repairs or improvements made to your home, take all the time you need to ensure you have found the right trader for you, at a price you are happy to pay. Never agree to having work done by somebody who is just passing or to take their word that any work needs to be done – no matter how small the price may seem or how urgent they claim it to be. If it is out of the blue, it’s not for you!

“Talk with friends and family about any tried and tested recommendations they might have, or consider a trading standards approved trader from our Buy With Confidence scheme.”
