Captivating bird photography exhibition lands at Oxfordshire Museum

A new exhibition showcasing impactful and stunning images of birds taken from around the globe in 2024 is coming to Oxfordshire this month.

Following an incredibly successful run two years ago, Oxfordshire County Council’s Oxfordshire Museum is once again hosting the Bird Photographer of the Year exhibition from 11 January.

The exhibition, displaying submissions from the 2024 competition, is touring the UK and will be at the museum until 23 February. This is its only appearance in Oxfordshire.

Councillor Neil Fawcett, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Corporate Services, said: “We are thrilled to be hosting this nationally acclaimed exhibition at our museum in Woodstock.

“Thousands of images were submitted to the competition, which is the largest bird photography competition in the world. These spectacular, often poignant images reveal stories from around the world. There’s something to appeal to everyone.

"We are also grateful for the financial support provided by the Friends of Oxfordshire Museum in hosting the exhibition."

During the February half-term, there will be bird inspired activities for all the family to take part in and enjoy.

Photographers from all over the world entered more than 23,000 images into the 2024 competition, across eight different categories, each with their eyes on the £3,500 grand prize.

Photographer Patricia Homonylo from Canada was declared the Bird Photographer of the Year 2024 for her thought provoking image ‘When Worlds Collide’. The photograph shows over 4,000 birds killed by colliding with windows and other reflective surfaces in urban areas in Toronto.

The Young Bird Photographer of the Year 2024 was awarded to 14 year old Spanish photographer Andrés Luis Domínguez Blanco for his creative angle on a nuthatch scrambling down an oak tree.

Last year, the competition donated £5,000 to partner charity Birds on the Brink, which provides vital funding to grassroots bird conservation projects around the world.

The 2025 competition is now open for entries at birdpoty.com and photographers of all experience levels are invited to submit their best bird photos. During February half-term, there will be bird inspired activities for all the family to take part in and enjoy. Items related to the exhibition are available for purchase in the museum shop.
