Be mindful of waste this Christmas
Every day we throw away 1.5 million meals, whether it be homemade or ready meals. Better planning and good use of leftovers means that you can create less waste and free up more time for festivities.
There are many ways that you can ensure that you make just the right amount. By using either a portion tool or dividing up ingredients and storing them separately, you can quickly and easily make a meal that’s just right.
The Love Food Hate Waste website has a wealth of information, advice and recipes.
However, there will be circumstances where things can’t be reused so please ensure that you dispose of them properly. All of your food waste can go in your food waste caddy. For any other waste generated over the Christmas period there are a couple of ways you can dispose of it.
Household Waste Recycling Centres
Alongside collection of your waste recycling bin and food caddy, the Household Waste Recycling Centres will still be open but will be operating on reduced hours. All sites will close early at 3pm on Thursday 24 and Thursday 31 December.
The sites will also be closed all day on Friday 25, Saturday 26 December and Friday 1 January. However on all other days they will be open as usual between 8am and 5pm.
Household Waste Recycling Centres are able to take a wide range of items that are generated over Christmas, including:
- Real Christmas trees (please ensure that you remove all decorations) - which are taken for composting
- Cardboard packaging
- Old electrical items, including TVs, game consoles, mobile phones and computers
- Textiles (clothes)
- Wrapping paper (paper type only)
