Banbury to host older people’s day... opportunity for a free electric blanket test

Groove aerobics, live music, dance, arts and crafts, health checks, and free electric blanket checks… Banbury’s older people’s day will have something for everyone on Wednesday 09 October.

Taking place at the Royal Voluntary Service, Cornhill Centre between 10:30am-4pm, Oxfordshire County Council is encouraging residents take up the offer of a free electric blanket check during the day. These must be pre-booked by phoning 01865 895999.

The County Council wants to ensure everyone is safe - as well as warm - this winter.

Richard Webb, Assistant Director Regulatory Services and Community Safety for Oxfordshire County Council, explains:

"If the condition of the blanket is allowed to deteriorate there is the possibility it could become faulty, risking injury and fire.

“We want to ensure that electric blankets are still safe for use. So, come along and encourage any elderly neighbours to attend too. It is better to be safe than sorry.

“The tests are free… but remember to pre-book!”

Testing electric blankets has taken place in Oxfordshire for over 20 years. The failure rate is still over 30%.

Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Rescue Service has dealt with house fires started by old electric blankets.
