New exhibition celebrates the work of Oxfordshire sculptor, Michael Black
A new exhibition entitled Michael Black: Chisel, Wood, Stone, is coming to the Oxfordshire Museum this spring, celebrating the work of the renowned local sculptor.
This unique exhibition presents, for the first time, the works and life of the Oxford sculptor, and celebrates his enduring legacy and artistic contribution.
It will be on display at the Oxfordshire County Council run museum in Woodstock from 15 March to 1 June. Entrance is free and donations are welcomed.
Councillor Neil Fawcett, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Corporate Services, said: “Michael Black was a talented sculptor who received notable public commissions, exhibited artwork at prestigious galleries, and restored the stonework of churches, colleges and other buildings across Oxford.
“This exhibition is a rare opportunity to discover this important artist’s legacy. Through loans and archival material from Black’s family we are treated to an intimate insight into the artist’s life.
“Discover the variety of Michael Black’s work from the iconic Emperor’s Heads of the Sheldonian Theatre to the abstract forms which filled his home in Chalfont Road.
“Of course, there’s so much to enjoy – make a day of it! You can enjoy a homemade lunch and cakes in our café and relax in the peaceful setting of the garden. Explore the permanent galleries within, or extend your experience with a visit to the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum”
For the first time, the museum garden will also feature artworks by Michael Black, including an artichoke shaped fountain, which once served wine.
Other must see elements include a life sized plaster model of an Ox, which formed the centre piece of Black’s own unique version of the Oxford May Day celebrations, which will also be celebrated with a demonstration by the Eynsham Morris Men on 24 May.
The exhibition also features three short films commissioned especially using archival films of the artist at home and work.
