Residents over the age of 55 with care needs are being encouraged by Oxfordshire County Council to apply for a brand new Extra Care Housing scheme in Faringdon.

Fern Meadows, which is now open for applications, offers 60 high-quality homes – 45 for rent and 15 for shared ownership – designed to help people live independently with care and support available on site.

Extra care housing is not the same as a care home. Residents live in their own self-contained apartments, with the reassurance of care and support tailored to their needs.

Such schemes are a modern, flexible alternative that allows people to maintain their independence while staying connected to their local community.

Fern Meadows has been thoughtfully designed with accessibility and comfort in mind. Residents can enjoy a range of on-site facilities, including:

  • A welcoming café/bistro and hair salon open to the public
  • A spacious residents’ lounge and activity room
  • A guest suite for visiting family and friends
  • Beautiful communal gardens
  • Secure storage for mobility aids

A dedicated local housing manager will oversee day-to-day operations, while an independent on-site Care Team will provide personalised support to residents.

Councillor Tim Bearder, Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, said: “Fern Meadows is a fantastic opportunity for people to live well with the right support in place.

“We want to challenge outdated perceptions of care and show that extra care housing offers a vibrant, independent lifestyle with help on hand when needed.

“It’s a great example of the Oxfordshire Way in action – putting people at the heart of services and helping them to live as independently as possible, for as long as possible.”

The scheme is primarily aimed at people aged 55 and over with health or care needs, though others may be considered by exception.

Families and carers are also encouraged to explore the scheme to help loved ones make informed choices about their future.

Applications are open now. Find more information here.
