Peter Rabbit™ bounces into action for museum’s big new summer show

Parent alert: A free fun-filled and interactive exhibition based on Beatrix Potter’s most famous creation launches this weekend.

Peter Rabbit will be skipping and jumping right off the page, transforming a part of The Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock for the summer.

The new show called Peter Rabbit™: Mischief and Mayhem opens this Saturday, June 16, at the Oxfordshire County Council-run museum and promises to be a wonderful mix of original art and objects with fun interactive elements for families to enjoy.

Visitors to the Brew House gallery can have fun helping Mrs.Tiggy-Winkle hang up the laundry or visit Mrs Rabbit in her burrow. Children can dress up as Peter Rabbit and help plant carrots in Mr McGregor’s garden too.

Eloise Chapman, assistant curator at The Oxfordshire Museum, said: “We are very excited to be welcoming Peter Rabbit and his friends to the museum.

“I think our visitors are going to love seeing the original watercolours from the book and gorgeous memorabilia, before climbing in Peter’s burrow, planting carrots and snuggling up in the reading corner to enjoy the stories all over again.”

Generations of children have grown up with Peter Rabbit, from reading the original Beatrix Potter Tales to watching the current TV animation on CBeebies. This exhibition looks at Peter Rabbit across the ages, and includes original artworks, first editions and early Peter Rabbit merchandise.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit is one of the world’s best-loved children’s books and was created by author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter in 1902.

The story has never been out of print since then and has sold in excess of 45 million copies globally.

Beatrix Potter personally oversaw the launch of subsequent products, making Peter Rabbit the oldest licensed character in history.

Today more than two million of her ‘little books’ are sold globally every year, whilst Peter Rabbit has appeared in books and products in more than 110 countries throughout the world.

Peter Rabbit™ : Mischief and Mayhem is a touring show and was curated by The River and Rowing Museum, Henley and Penguin Ventures. The exhibition has been supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which awarded the Museum a grant of over £17,000.
