Interested in becoming an on-call firefighter? Then come and have a go!

Want to find out if you have what it takes to be an on-call firefighter? Well now is your chance!

Have you ever thought about becoming an on-call firefighter?  Are you over 18 and live or work within five minutes of a fire station in Oxfordshire?  Now is your chance to find out more about this paid, professional role.  All you need to do is book onto a two-hour taster session at a ‘have a go day' being hosted by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service at Henley Fire Station on Sunday April 23 or at Chipping Norton Fire Station on Saturday April 29.

On-call firefighters are people that will go about their daily everyday life until they are alerted to an emergency incident in their area; then they have five minutes to get to their local fire station and respond as a professional firefighter.

Those who attend a two-hour taster session will have the chance to talk to on-call firefighters, try out practical assessments such as ladder climbing, hose running and putting on breathing apparatus and find out more about the recruitment process.

Firefighting is open to people from all backgrounds

Group manager Paul Bremble said: “Our on-call firefighters are the backbone of Oxfordshire’s Fire and Rescue Service and the taster sessions are a great way for anyone who is considering applying to find out more about the role. Firefighting is a career that is open to people from all backgrounds and we are keen for women and people from ethnic minority communities to consider how it might suit them. These sessions are designed to help people decide as you get to experience some of the drills and tasks firefighters get involved with and ask any questions you have about the role.”
