Frideswide Square – part closure of Hythe Bridge Street from May 26

The next phase of the project involves work in front of the Royal Oxford Hotel. In order for this to be done safely and as quickly as possible the council needs to close part of Park End Street at its junction with Rewley Road.

The work will involve the laying of more granite kerbing, new yorkstone slabs and creating the new carriageway for the revised road alignment.

This closure is set to come into force from Tuesday 26 May 2015 and will last for approximately six weeks.

The closure involves the stretch of road that fronts the Royal Oxford Hotel. Access to and from Rewley Road, Upper Fisher Row and Hythe Bridge Street will be via Park End Street and Worcester Street and suitable signs will be installed for drivers.

The hotel and all businesses in the area will remain open and accessible to customers. This stage will reduce the number of movements at the roundabout at the junction of Park End Street and Hollybush Row and will help address safety concerns in that area.

Adjustments to the traffic signals at the junction of Worcester Street/George Street/Hythe Bridge Street will be made to accommodate all vehicle movements.

County Councillor David Nimmo Smith, Cabinet member for Environment, said: “Work is going well and you will see the area outside the business school is really shaping up.

This is part of a much bigger initiative to improve the city’s transport infrastructure to cope with future demand and enhance key gateways into the city.

“While the work is going on it is well worth going to Frideswide Square. Not only can you see how things are shaping, you can also see what is on offer from the businesses down there.”
