Find out more about your waste during Recycle Week 2014

The week is the annual national celebration of all the work that is done to get the most out of waste and help residents to maximise the amount that is recycled.

Recycle Week offers a platform for organisations from all sectors to join together and share messages about recycling. The aim is to increase consumer knowledge about recycling and encourage more people to recycle more things, more often.

County Councillor David Nimmo Smith, Cabinet member for environment and economy, said: “Oxfordshire residents are very familiar with recycling and know all about using their separate recycling bins. In fact Oxfordshire is at the top of the league when it comes to recycling and reducing household waste.

“But Recycle Week is about pushing the message that there is always something extra you can do in a fun and informative way. You can also find out a bit more about where your waste goes and the innovative things that are done to stop it simply going into landfill.

“There are events being held across the county so there is a good chance that there will be something happening near you.”

Highlights from the list of events include the chance to meet with “master composters” and get more out of your green and kitchen waste on 21 and 22 June. The Master Composters programme aims to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste being sent to landfill, by encouraging more people to start composting at home and supporting those already doing so.

And, on 17 June, there is an opportunity to see behind the scenes at the anaerobic digestion plant at Wallingford. This fascinating facility processes over 50,000 tonnes of solid and liquid wastes a year, generating 2.4MW of electricity and producing an excellent biofertiliser.
