Family fun day marks museum’s half-century

An action-packed family event is being held at the Oxfordshire Museum in Woodstock to mark 50 years – to the day – since it opened its doors.

The free event, which takes place from 12 – 4.30pm on Saturday 15 October, will feature live music, Iron Age re-enactments, displays and activities featuring

  • Oxford Archaeology
  • Ashmolean Museum
  • Museum of the History of Science
  • The Bate Collection of Musical Instruments
  • RSPB

To celebrate the landmark anniversary, every 50th child and every 50th adult who joins the party will receive a birthday present from the Museum. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Museum.

Behind the scenes at Museum Resource Centre

The following day (Sunday 16 October, 10am – 4pm) The Museum Resource Centre in Standlake will be offering visitors the chance to go behind the scenes and discover how items are stored and used. The centre, which houses the county's collections of archaeology and history, is hosting guided tours and talks from experts. This event is also free.

Oxfordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Cultural Services Lorraine Lindsay-Gale said: “We’re very pleased to be celebrating 50 years of the County Museums Service and hoping to share the weekend with as many people as possible. There’s so much to see and discover at both the museum and the resource centre, and something for all the family to enjoy.”
